At the University of Houston, leadership doesn’t always begin with a title. Sometimes, it starts with curiosity and the choice to get involved. For Michaela Guerrero, senior marketing student and president of The Dress Code Club, that decision turned into a journey defined by growth and leadership. As a transfer student entering her junior year, Guerrero was looking for more than just involvement, she was looking for alignment. She was looking for a student organization that reflected both her interests and the future she envisioned for herself. This search led her to The Dress Code Club during its earliest days.

“I immediately felt a connection. I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of—not just as a general member, but in a bigger way”

Drawn to the club’s mission to educate and offer firsthand opportunities within the luxury fashion sectors to students, Guerrero joined as a general member during The Dress Code Clubs inaugural semester. She witnessed the organization grow, carving out a space where industry insight met student opportunity.

By her second semester at the University of Houston, Guerrero stepped into the role of Marketing Director, aligning her academic focus with hands-on-experience. It was here that her role shifted from participant to contributor. Her marketing role allowed her to working across both creative and executive teams, which helped her develop a stronger understanding of how ideas are built, communicated and executed. She credits her marketing position as a foundation for her eventual rise into the position of President.

Now serving her last semester as President, Guerrero leads with both clarity and intention. Her role requires adaptability, strong communication, and the ability to manage both people and vision. From overseeing events to guiding the organization’s direction, she embraces the responsibility of leading a growing community. Beyond internal leadership, she uses her platform to forge meaningful industry connections, create opportunities for members to engage with professionals and guide the club toward larger impact.

“This role has challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone,” she says. “It’s shown me how much I’m capable of, not just as a leader, but as a person.”

Like any meaningful journey, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Balancing expectations, deadlines, and leadership demands required discipline and resilience—but in those moments, she found growth. Her experiences as a leader of The Dress Code Club ultimately strengthen her ability to lead with confidence. They also pushed her to become more adaptable, learning how to navigate high-pressure situations while continuing to support and guide her team.

Reflecting on her journey with The Dress Code Club, Guerrero notes the club’s transformative potential. From curated networking events and guest speaker panels to fashion editorials and industry connections, the organization has created a space for students to confidently step into the luxury fashion world. She believes it’s a space for professional growth, real opportunities and meaningful connections as it allows students to gain knowledge and develop skills needed in order to succeed in their desired career.

“Being part of this organization is more than just joining a club",” she says. “It’s a step toward getting closer to the fashion industry.”

For Guerrero, what started as a search for belonging, became something more meaningful to her. What started as a simple decision to get involved on campus evolved into a defining chapter of her college experience, shaping not only her career aspirations but also her development as a leader. Her journey reflects a broader truth shared by many student leaders: that growth often begins with uncertainty, and leadership can emerge from simply choosing to take that first step.
